About DJ Doctrinaire

Doctrinaire is Brisbane DJ/producer Jody Smith.

Want a VINYL DJ for your bar, cafe or event? I like to mix up what I play in a set, which could be old funk, soul, disco, Latin house or golden-era hip hop. How about dub, ska and reggae? Or indie and alternative classics? Or lounge, Polynesian, exotica and Bond themes? Or 80s dance and synth pop?

For booking enquiries, call or text 0434 898 464 or email djdoctrinaire@gmail.com

My love of electronic music began as a 13-year- old when I bought the Human League’s “Dare” album.

Whilst studying media in Lismore, Northern NSW, in the late 80’s, I became involved with community radio 2NCR-FM. At the same time, I began a DJ residency at Lismore nightclub, Stiletto’s.

I presented and produced The Big Mix, the NSW North Coast’s first 100% dance and electronic music radio show, for 5 years. I also ran the fortnightly club event Evolution at Lismore’s infamous Canberra Hotel, and deejayed at seminal, pre-bush-doof-era parties in country halls at Corndale and Coorabell, near Byron Bay, during 1991-92.

I’ve since deejayed professionally, and just for the love of it, holding down residencies and guest spots in Coffs Harbour and Brisbane over the years.

My first venture into music production was an “ambient” remix of Beats International’s “Dub Be Good To Me”, using an acappella from the 12”, loops, and spliced 8 track tape. Unfortunately I lost the tape years ago!

In the early 2000’s some of my techno productions under the name HSP were played nationally on Australia’s youth radio network, Triple J, by presenter Nicole Foote.

In October 2015, under the name Doctrinaire, my track “Le Petit Prince“was included on the Clan Analogue compilation album (CD and download) “Intone: Voice Abstractions“. “Le Petit Prince” is a house track created entirely of samples of of my son’s voice, recorded when he was 5 or 6 years old.

Check out my DJ sets, original music and remixes on Soundcloud and Mixcloud.
